About Gingival Hyperpigmentation
Gingival hyperpigmentation is not uncommon. Caused by high levels of melanin in the skin, these dark spots are often the result of one of the following influencers: smoking, medication, or genetics. In most cases, the concerns are aesthetic, not health-related.
Laser Depigmentation
If dark spots on your gums are a concern, you may be a good candidate for laser de-pigmentation. The procedure is often referred to as “gum bleaching”. Contrary to popular belief, this procedure doesn’t actually involve bleach, but rather precision laser energy to quickly and painlessly correct darkening of the gums in just one visit! The procedure generally takes less than an hour and results can last up to 20 years.
After the Procedure
Any minor discomfort that is experienced after the procedure can usually be eliminated with over-the-counter pain medication. You will be able to eat, talk and return to work as needed right after the treatment. We recommend that you not smoke for 7 days following your procedure, or quit completely.
